چکیده

STACEE is a ground based γ-ray observatory that uses a heliostat array, built for solar energy research, to detect atmospheric Cherenkov radiation from γ-ray initiated extensive air showers. During the first half of 2001, a prototype detector, STACEE-48, was used to detect the blazar Markarian 421, which was in an extremely active state. Observations from March to May of 2001 yielded an integral flux of (8.0± 0.7stat ± 1.5sys)× 10−10cm−2s−1 at energies above 140± 20 GeV, and provide some evidence of correlated trends on time scales of a week or more in the GeV and X-ray bands.

Near Infrared Intraday Variability of Mrk 421

We report results from our monitoring of the BL Lac object Mrk 421 in the near-IR J band. The observations, aimed at studying the intraday variability (IDV) of the object, were carried out systematically over an extended (and near-continuous) period of eight nights from the 1.2m Mount Abu Infrared Telescope, India. There are limited studies for Mrk 421 in the J band for such an extended period....

X-ray flares from Markarian 501

Motivated by the recent discovery of a hierarchical X-ray flaring phenomenon in Mrk 421, we conducted a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 501, another well-known TeV blazar, by making use of the rich RXTE archival database. We detected flares over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes, as in the case of Mrk 421. However, the flares do not seem to occur nearly as freq...

Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) was the first blazar detected at gamma-ray energies above 300 GeV, and it remains one of only twelve TeV blazars detected to date. TeV gamma-ray measurements of its flaring activity and spectral variability have placed constraints on models of the high-energy emission from blazars. However, observations between 50 and 300 GeV are rare, and the high-energy peak of the spe...

Observation of Strong Variability in the X-Ray Emission from Markarian 421 Correlated with the May 1996 TeV Flare

We observed the BL Lac object Markarian 421 with the X-ray satellite RXTE and the Whipple Air Cerenkov Telescope during a two week correlated Xray/gamma-ray campaign in May 1996. Two dramatic outbursts with extremely rapid and strong flux variations were observed at TeV energies during this period. The X-ray emission in the 2-10 keV band was highly variable and reached a peak flux of 5.6×10 erg...
